Theater for Young Audiences announces Newsies auditions, open house
Theater for Young Audiences (TYA) enters its 30th season with a bang by announcing auditions for Disney’s critically-
acclaimed and wildly popular Newsies The Musical and an open house for its new home in downtown Sheboygan.
Set in New York City at the turn of the 20th century and inspired by the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, Newsies is a rousing story of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of young “newsies.” Together, they dream of a better life far from the hardship of the streets.
When publishing titans raise distribution prices at the expense of the kids delivering papers, Jack rallies the troops from across the city to retaliate. With help from the strong and feisty female reporter Katherine Plumber, all of New York City soon recognizes the power youth possess to make a difference.
Newsies is an ensemble cast with a wide range of stage opportunities including athletic, high-energy newsies, vaudeville show girls, tough guys, businessmen, and more.
This popular Broadway show has been adapted to highlight both female and male roles, including “newsies” girls who sell “papes” along with the boys and features dancers, gymnasts, strong vocalists, and non-dancing character roles. In short, it’s a breathtaking production with a wide range of performance opportunities for teens and adults.
Auditions are being held October 23 and 25 at TYA’s new home at 931 N. 8th Street in Sheboygan. More information can be found at tyasheboygan.org
and online registration can be completed there as well. Rehearsals begin November 12 and the show opens January 11, 2019.
Produced by TYA’s artistic director Hannah Benton, Newsies spotlights the accomplished duo of stage director Laurie Dillman and music director Paul Sucherman.
On October 16 from 4:30 to 7:30 pm, TYA also proudly opens the doors to its brand new home at the same location. The Open House is free of charge to all TYA supporters, participants, and general public and will feature refreshments. All are welcome to view the expansive facility which highlights many spaces for rehearsals, performances, and storage.
