Giving, like kindness, comes in many forms. The holidays are a wonderful time to remind us to extend a thankful gesture to those around us who make a difference in our lives. Whether it’s the crossing guard, neighbor, school teacher, friend, closest family or complete stranger, the holiday spirit does truly lie in the gesture of appreciation. This holiday season, when you are making your list and checking it twice, make sure that there is meaning and connection in all that you do.

Kind posters currently hang on the walls at Kohler Schools that read: “Be the Kind of person who isn’t afraid to ask someone if they are okay twice if they say they are, but look like they aren’t. Be the kind of person who smiles at people even if they don’t smile back. Be the kind of person you wished for when no one was there for you. Be the kind of person who is brave enough to stand alone in a crowd for what is right. Be that person because we need more people like that in the world.”

As the holiday season is upon us, be the kind of person who gives thoughtfully. Give a good book, with a note of why you think the receiver would like it. Give a homemade meal or treat that brings comfort to someone who needs it, give a kind handwritten note that tells why the person is important to you. Give your favorite things. Give your parking space, give to the little red kettles and a thank you to the volunteers ringing the bells. Give an “I owe you” of a future adventure, make memories, remember life itself is a gift and the best gifts come from the heart.
