Superintendent’s Report (Quynh Trueblood)

Performance

I appreciate the Board’s commitment to conducting an annual performance evaluation of the superintendent. It is often a difficult task, but can be made much more productive with a clear process, established metrics, and evidence.  Even with these measures in place, it remains a science and an art. What I see as the difference maker is the time each of board members has taken to be in the school alongside the administrators, support staff, and teachers. Regular touches, questions, and growing support are noticed and appreciated.

Good business
Matt Kautzer completed the financial audit. This process is a significant part of the business and Matt deserves recognition for his expert work with ensuring a clean audit. This is year 2 of online registration. Under Cindy Payne’s direction, all hands are on deck to provide expanded and flexible access for parents and improved system efficiencies. We are optimistic that near 100% of students will register before the school year starts. Ultimately, this process ensures we are prepared to give students the very best throughout the year. I am pleased to see the leadership messages come from principals, Lisa Greene and Nick DeBaker, and their preparations to open their schools for the new year.
Preparing for the new school year
It’s been very good to have Nick DeBaker onboard.  We are working on the 3-day presession program for staff to launch the new year in late August.  The facilities maintenance and deep cleaning is ahead of schedule and the results are incredible under Drew Dantzler’s charge.  The diamond scrubbers have restored the terrazzo floors to their original luster.

Elementary Principal Report (Lisa Greene)

As soon as August 1st hits this week, most of the elementary teachers start making an occasional appearance to get started on their work to kick off the 2019-20 school year. I always look forward to that time as you can feel the excitement start to enter the building again, after a rather quiet July.

Registration is wrapping up this week and classroom assignments will be sent out to parents shortly after the registration window closes. The kids are very eager to learn who their teachers are, so it is an exciting time! I am happy that August arrives this week! It is one of my favorite times of the year!

MS-HS Principal Report (Nicholas DeBaker)

Over the past 4 weeks I have had the privilege of meeting with many of the stakeholders here at Kohler. I opened up with an email to the staff to stop in and meet me. That week I had several teachers come in to say hello. Every student and parent that I have met has been very welcoming. Everyone that works for Kohler Public Schools during the summer has been very helpful with all of my questions.

The bulk of my work this month has been to learn the language and processes that are used here at Kohler. I have worked with my counselors to help develop a schedule for the upcoming orientation. The goal is to give the parents and students the opportunity to meet their teachers and walk through their students schedule. We want our incoming students to feel confident and comfortable day one.

Last week I was able to attend a Challenge Success conference in Evanston Illinois. The day long conference gave me the opportunity to engage with our student wellness initiative. I look forward to working with the team to develop a healthy climate and culture for our students here at Kohler.

Review of District Finances

The annual financial audit of the 2018-19 school year has been the focus of the business office in June and July.  This audit is conducted by an independent audit firm and is the culmination of all financial related activities during the year.  Ultimately, this audit provides assurances to the Board that the District’s financial statements fairly present the financial position of the District and that the financial statements are free from material misstatement.  The audit is largely complete and no issues exist to report to the Board.

Governor Evers approved the state budget for the years 2019-20 and 2020-21.  A review of its impact on the District will be presented in August.
