The Kohler girls tennis team continued its string of successes into the postseason again this season. Postseason play began with subsectionals, where the Bombers advanced seven players to sectionals. From there, it was a repeat of last year, as the Bombers qualified five players for the 2018 WIAA State Tournament in Madison. The same five made the trip to Madison in 2017.
state with a 6-1,6-2 win over Xavier and a 6-2,2-6,6-4 win over USM. Sobecki earned her third straight trip to state, Grose returned for the second year. Sobecki and Grose are two-time sectional champions, and Sarah Sobecki’s name is permanently etched in the Kohler girls tennis record book, as she becomes the first Bomber girl’s tennis player to win three sectional championships.
The Bombers finished in third place overall in the sectional team standings, behind USM and Xavier.
WIAA State Tournament
In WIAA State Tournament action Shelby Horth faced a familiar opponent in Xavier’s Erika Curtin (No. 8 seed, 22-5). It was the fourth meeting between the two and one of the best first round matches of the tournament. They traded leads during both sets before Curtin narrowly edged Horth 7-5,6-4. Shelby Horth finished her junior season with a 19-12 record.
The doubles team of Sarah Sobecki and Olivia Grose drew the tournament’s No. 5 seed, USM’s Gridley/Watkins (18-11). They battled hard, eventually falling 2-6,3-6. Sobecki and Grose finished their season with a 24-3 record. Senior Sarah Sobecki closes out her high school tennis career with a 71-19 varsity record.
Elly Udovich and Ava Hoffmann entered the State Tournament as the No. 4 seed and received a first round bye. They faced USM’s No. 3 doubles team of Siddalingaiah/Daskal (24-4) in the second round in a tough three-set match, winning 4-6,6-4,6-1. Next up was USM’s No. 1 doubles team Gridley/Watkins (20-11). This was the third meeting for the two teams this season. Udovich and Hoffmann came out swinging, winning 6-1,6-2. The win earned them a spot in the state semifinals, where they faced the tournament’s No. 1 seed, Apostoli/Setter (20-0) of Kenosha St. Joseph. The Bombers fell to KSJ 2-6,1-6. In the third place match, Udovich/Hoffmann defeated Diedrich/Teuteberg (17-14) of Catholic Memorial 6-2,6-3 to earn a third place medal and a spot on the podium for the second year in a row. Udovich/Hoffmann finished the season with a 29-3 record. Senior Elly Udovich closes out her high school career with an 81-20 Varsity record.
