The Kohler girls tennis team kicked off the season on August 7 with a talented group of 20 players. The Bombers returned nine varsity letter winners from last year’s team, including five state qualifiers. Seniors Elly Udovich and Molly Thomack were named co-captains of the 2018 squad.
The Bombers opened the season winning the eight team Kohler Invitational, crowning champions at #1 doubles (Elly Udovich/Ava Hoffmann), #2 doubles (Sarah Sobecki/Olivia Grose), and #3 doubles (Clara Montes/Erin Pellegrino). This is the third consecutive year the Bombers won the team championship.
The girls raced through the regular season, compiling a 16-4 dual match record. The Bombers crushed their Eastern Wisconsin Conference opponents, finishing 9-0 in league play for the third consecutive year. In addition, the Bombers didn’t drop a single individual match in the nine EWC duals, going a perfect 63-0. This accomplishment has not been equaled by any EWC boys or girls team within the past 18 years (and possibly much longer than that). This is the Bombers 5th EWC title in the past 6 years.
During the regular season the Bombers competed against the top Division 2 teams from across the state. The Bombers earned their first ever win against Eau Claire Regis earlier this season, also beating them a second time later in the season. The Bombers lost to Xavier 3-4, Madison Edgewood 2-5, Catholic Memorial 2-5, and last year’s State Championship team, University School of Milwaukee 1-6.
The season continues with subs and sectionals, Oct. 2-3 at the Sports Core. The Bombers are hoping to be well represented at the Individual State Tournament and will be looking for a return trip to Team State. The Bombers made back-to-back trips to Team State in 2015 and 2016.
