Submitted by girls tennis coach, Brad Hoffmann – The 2017 Kohler girls tennis team once again rewrote the record books as they closed out another successful season.
The Bombers wrapped up a perfect Eastern Wisconsin Conference season, finishing 9-0 in conference play. This is the team’s second consecutive EWC title, and the fourth title in the past five seasons.
In post season play, the Bombers advanced four flights to the sectional tournament held at Sports Core in Kohler. In sectional play, the Bombers had an outstanding day of play, qualifying five players for the 2017 WIAA Girls Tennis State Individual Tournament. In the process, the team finished as sectional runner-up in the overall team standings behind University School of Milwaukee. The Bombers are coming off two consecutive years as sectional team champions, earning a trip to the team state tournament each of the past two seasons. The Bombers also finished as sectional runner-up in 2011.

USM 52, Kohler 32, Xavier 31, Brookfield Academy 31, Fox Valley Lutheran 21, St. Mary Catholic 16, New London 10, (eleven other teams with fewer than 10 pts).
Sophomore Shelby Horth started sectionals qualifying for her second trip to the the State Girls Individual Tournament at #1 singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win over New London. She dropped her next two matches to USM (0-6, 0-6) and Xavier (3-6, 2-6) to finish in fourth place. This was Shelby’s second trip to state for the individual tournament. Shelby’s season record stands at 16-13.
Junior Elly Udovich and Freshman Ava Hoffmann qualified for state at #1 doubles with a win over New London 6-0, 6-0. They won their next two matches over Brookfield Academy (6-3, 6-4) and USM (6-4, 6-2) and were crowned sectional champions. This was Elly’s second trip to the Individual State Tournament and her second straight sectional championship. Elly and Ava’s season record is 16-4.
Junior Sarah Sobecki and Sophomore Olivia Grose qualified for state at #2 doubles. Sarah and Olivia needed two straight wins over Xavier (4-6, 6-2, 6-4) and USM (6-4, 6-2) to earn their way to state and to be crowned sectional champions. This was Sarah’s second trip to the Individual State Tournament and her second straight sectional championship. Sarah and Olivia have a 21-6 record.
Sophomore Stephanie Spieth finished in third place in the #4 singles flight. Stephanie beat Fox Valley Lutheran 6-2, 6-1; but fell in the finals to USM 1-6, 2-6. Stephanie ends her season with a 21-5 varsity record.
The Bomber varsity team also includes senior Grace Pellegrino (13-10), juniors Molly Thomack (18-7) and Clara Montes (12-9), and freshmen Erin Pellegrino (15-12) and Nadia Wandschneider (7-4). The Bomber JV squad includes Evie Brohn (4-4), Bailey Campione (5-5), Tess Trueblood (12-4), Grace Unger (3-6), Marcella Senti (11-6), Taylor Sager (7-8), Hannah Shvartsman (6-6), and Molly Hunsucker (7-6).

Individual state results
In Thursday’s opening round matches, Shelby Horth lost a very tight marathon match to New London’s Kate Christian 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-10. Shelby made a strong comeback from a 2-5 second set deficit to force the third set, but came up a little short in the end. Shelby finished her sophomore season 16-14.
Sarah Sobecki and Olivia Grose faced Brookfield Academy’s Anna Deubel/Katherine Hearnden in a see-saw battle. Sarah and Olivia battled back after dropping the first set but lost 0-6, 6-0, 7-10. This was another great comeback, as they were down 0-7 in the third set super breaker before making a run at the end. Sarah and Olivia finish their season at 21-7.
Elly Udovich and Ava Hoffmann finished in fifth place at the state tournament, going 4-1 over the three days of the tournament. They opened the tournament against Shorewood’s Edy Reckmeyer/Lindsay Nelson. Elly and Ava came out on top 6-2, 6-2. In Friday’s second round match they faced Brianna Flayter/Kya Gordon, St. Thomas Moore (18-3). The Bombers won that match 6-0, 6-3 to advance to the round of 8. Next up was last year’s state runner-up and this year’s #1 seed, Kaitlyn Kalinka/Megan Setter, Kenosha, St. Joseph Catholic Academy (30-0). The Bombers jumped out to a 4-3 lead in the first set but in the end lost 4-6, 1-6. In Saturday’s medal round the Bomber duo beat Xavier’s Erica Curtin/Lily Anne VanYe 7-5, 6-2, and closed out the day beating the #4 seed team of Mackenzie Lindow/Erin Rice (29-4, East Troy) 6-4, 6-2. Elly and Ava finish their season at 20-5.
